James A. Scott was probably born about 1829. He joined the U.S. Mormon B attalion in 1846 and marched to Santa Fe as both a private and later a c orporal in Company E. He is not known to be the brother or cousin of Leonard M. Scott, parents are unknown, but he had a sister Margaret. He and others would have had shared similar experiences in the same Company. Sgt. Tyler made a transcription error naming him as James R. Scott. He was on detached service 10 Nov 1846 as a member of Captain Brown's detachment sent to Pueblo, Colorado.

Larson, "Database of the Mormon Battalion" p. 207, "On the 5th of February another death occurred, that of James A. Scott, a promising young man, who died after a short illness of winter fever and liver complaint. He was buried with the honors of war."
